How Do I Update H&R Block Software?

Tax laws and forms can change throughout the tax season. They might even have changed since we released the H&R Block Tax Software program.

We recommend you update your H&R Block software frequently so you’ll have the latest forms and information. You must be connected to the Internet to check for updates and update the H&R Block Tax Software.

If you’re updating your state program, your federal program might be updated at the same time.

If you’re running one of these operating systems, you’ll need administrator privileges to download and install updates:

• Windows 8
• Windows 8.1
• Windows 10

To update from within the H&R Block program:

1. When you check for an update, we’ll show the H&R Block Tax Software Manager dialog box.
2. In this dialog box, click Next.
3. If an update is available, click Update.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the update.

Update H&R Block Software Using the Update Center

You can always update your H&R Block software using our Update Center if you:

• Have problems updating from within the program.
• Have Internet access on a different computer from the one you prepared your return on.

Update H&R Block Software for Windows

You can visit the H&R Block Tax Software Update Center to see any updates available to you for this year or any prior-year software.

For a federal update in your current-year software program:

1. Under the Federal Updates section, click the Windows Program Updates link.
2. From the drop-down list, choose the product version, then click Download Update.

For a state update in your current-year software program:

1. Under the State Updates section, click the Windows Program Updates link.
2. From the drop-down list, choose the appropriate state program, then click Download Update. If your state isn’t listed in the drop-down menu, an update hasn’t been released yet.
3. Save the update file to your desktop.
4. Close the H&R Block Tax Software program.
5. Right-click the .exe file and choose Run as Administrator. If you can’t find the update file you downloaded, you might have to perform a search for the file.
6. Follow the instructions displayed by the update program to complete the installation.

Update H&R Block Software for Mac users

You can visit our website to see any updates available to you for this year or any prior-year software.

For a federal update:

2. From the drop-down list, choose the product version, then click Download Update.

For a state update:

1. Under the State Updates section, click the Apple Program Updates link.
2. From the drop-down list, choose the appropriate state program and then click Download Update. If your state isn’t listed in the drop-down menu, an update hasn’t been released yet.
3. Save the update file to your desktop.
4. Close the H&R Block Tax Software program.
5. Double-click the .dmg file.
6. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the update.
