I have a question about a 1098-T dependent issue. My child paid his own tuition, so I didn’t claim a Form 1098-T on my return. However, I claimed him as a dependent. Now, he’s not able to claim the 1098-T on his return. Should I file an amended return?

You can’t claim the tuition and fees deduction for expenses that your child paid. However, you may be able amend your return to claim an education credit if:

  • Your child qualifies for the credits.
  • Your child has qualified education expenses.

Since your child is a dependent, he can’t claim the tuition and fees deduction on his own return. This is true whether or not you claimed him as your dependent. If your child owes tax, he could still qualify for an education credit.
