Revised state tax deadlines for 2020 returns (2021 filing season)

While the federal tax deadline for tax year 2020 returns was May 17, 2021, not every state tax filing deadline for 2020 coincides with the temporary federal due date.

We’ll walk you through what you need to know about these revised deadlines, but first let’s recap what’s normal for state taxes.

When are state taxes due normally?

State tax filing deadlines differ from state to state. The same holds true for the state-by-state payment deadlines. However, many state tax due dates are the same as the federal tax due date.

What is the deadline for my state taxes now?

Due to the continued coronavirus crisis, most state tax deadlines for 2020 have been extended, similar to last tax season. To help you understand what’s changed with your state, we’ve provided details around this relief below.

Find your state tax filing deadlines for 2020

Please refer to H&R Block’s state tax deadline table to find your revised state tax deadline for 2020 taxes. Keep the following information in mind as you plan for your tax filing.

  • You do not need to take any additional steps to qualify for the revised state tax deadline.
  • If you can file and pay any taxes owed, you should continue to do so.
  • States prefer you e-file, use direct deposit, or electronic payments when possible.
  • The temporary revised state tax filing and payment deadline for 2020 taxes applies for the 2021 filing season only. Next year, states will return to their normal due dates.

State tax extensions

For most states, the standard state tax extension to file, if requested, continues to extend the filing deadline until October 15, 2021. If you need additional time to file beyond the temporarily revised state tax due date for the 2021 filing season (tax year 2020), you should follow the state’s existing procedures for requesting an extension of time to file.

Keep in mind: An extension of time to file does not extend the time to pay without incurring penalties and interest.
