IRS Change of Address

If you moved since you filed your last return, you probably arranged to have your mail forwarded to your new address. However, not all post office branches forward government checks.

Notify the IRS of your address change. That way, you’ll receive refunds or mail regarding your past and current returns. You can do this by either:

  • Completing IRS Form 8822: Change of Address and mailing it to the address on the form.
  • Writing a letter informing the IRS of an address change. Mail this letter to the IRS campus where you filed your last return. Include your:
    • Full name
    • Old and new addresses
    • Social Security number (SSN)
    • Signature

If you and your spouse filed as married filing jointly last year but you now live apart, you should each notify the IRS of your new address.
