I have an issue regarding the wrong filing status. After I filed my return, I realized that I didn’t use correct filing status. Is it possible to amend filing status — Should I amend my return?

Yes. Since you’ve filed your return with the incorrect filing status, use Form 1040X to supply amended or additional tax information to change your return. Submit Form 1040X to the IRS. Form 1040X will be your new return.

To prepare the Form 1040X, you need both:

  • Your original Form 1040
  • A new Form 1040 with the corrections

Form 1040X will ask for the old and new calculations, as well as the difference between the two.

You can prepare Form 1040X using the H&R Block online program, but you’ll have to print and mail it. The IRS doesn’t allow you to e-file Form 1040X. To learn more, see www.irs.gov.

Allow the IRS 16 weeks to process your amended return. You can check the status of your amended return at the IRS website three weeks after mailing your return.

If you amend your federal return, you might also need to amend your state return. Contact your state tax agency for more information.
