You can’t itemize your taxes if you file Form 1040-EZ.

Your itemized deductions might phase out based on your income.

The 1040-EZ only allows two types of filing status: Single and Married Filing Jointly. The 1040-EZ does not allow for you to claim dependents. If you have dependents you should file Form 1040 or 1040-A. For spouses choosing to file their taxes as married, filing separately they will need to complete a different tax return as the 1040-EZ does not allow for this filing status.

If you file a 1040-EZ you are not eligible to itemize your deductions. You are required to take the standard deduction. The standard deduction is an amount that reduces the taxable income and eliminates the need to itemize. While taking the standard deduction is easier, itemizing my result in a lower tax bill.

Depending on your circumstances, it may be worthwhile to itemize your taxes. You should calculate both methods to determine which is most beneficial to you.

If you choose to itemize you will need to complete a different IRS tax return – the 1040 or 1040A.
